Stair Landing Refresh: A Small Update That Made a Big Impact
Sometimes the smallest spaces in a home hold the most potential. Our stair landing is one of those spots. It is a place you pass by every day, but it is also a natural pause point in the home. It connects different levels of the house and quietly contributes to the overall feel of your home.
For a long time, our stair landing worked, but it did not feel intentional. The pieces there were more about function than design, and over time the space started to feel like it was simply holding items that had not found a better place yet.
With a few thoughtful updates, I turned the area into a space that feels warm, styled, and cohesive. The refresh was simple, but the impact was bigger than I expected.
And the best part is that the transformation came from just a handful of changes.
The Before
Before refreshing the stair landing, the space looked fine at first glance. But once I started paying attention to it, a few things stood out.
The bench we had there came from our previous home. While it worked well in that house, it was too short for this wall, which made the area feel slightly unfinished.
The gallery wall frames were great for the space, but they constantly tilted out of alignment every time someone walked up or down the stairs.
And the light fixture above the landing was functional but very builder grade and basic. It did not add anything visually to the space.
Here is what the stair landing looked like before the refresh.
Looking at the space now, it really shows how much scale, lighting, and small styling updates can change a space.
The After
With just a few updates, the stair landing now feels completely different.
A longer bench anchors the wall, the gallery wall feels fresh again, and a new light fixture adds a little personality to the space.
What I love most is that the space now feels intentional rather than temporary.
Small spaces are not limitations. They are opportunities to design with intention.
Choosing a Bench That Fits the Space
The biggest change to the stair landing was replacing the bench.
The old bench was simply too small for the wall, which made the space feel slightly unbalanced. When styling any area of a home, scale is everything.
I swapped it for a longer wood bench that better fits the wall and immediately makes the space feel grounded.
The warm wood tone also adds a natural layer to the space. Because we use wood accents throughout our home, it helps the stair landing feel connected to the rest of the house.
Now the bench feels like it belongs here instead of simply filling an empty spot.

Refreshing the Gallery Wall
The gallery wall above the bench has always been one of my favorite features of the stair landing.
The frames themselves were perfect for the wall, so instead of replacing them I simply refreshed the photos inside.
Sometimes the easiest way to update a space is by keeping the structure the same and changing the details.

I also added a faux tree next to the bench to bring a little height and softness to the space. Even small areas benefit from a touch of greenery.

The greenery adds warmth and helps balance the wall visually.
The Trick That Keeps Gallery Wall Frames Straight
If you have ever styled a gallery wall near stairs, you probably know how frustrating it can be when the frames constantly shift.
Every time someone walks up the stairs, the frames move just enough to slowly tilt out of alignment.
For years I found myself constantly straightening the frames on this wall.
During this refresh I finally tried something simple that completely fixed the issue.
Double sided gallery sticky tack.
By placing a small piece on the bottom corners of each frame, the frames stay perfectly aligned even with daily stair traffic.
You can find the gallery wall tack here:
It is a tiny detail, but it makes the gallery wall look so much more polished.
Sometimes the smallest changes in a home create the biggest feeling of welcome.
Updating the Light Fixture
The final piece of the refresh was the light fixture above the stair landing.
Lighting is one of the most overlooked design elements in small transition spaces, but it can completely change the feeling of an area.
The old light was very basic and purely functional. It worked, but it did not add anything visually.
I replaced it with an elevated flush mount light with a scalloped dome and subtle gold accents.
You can shop the light fixture here:

The scalloped shape adds a little personality while the gold details tie in with other lighting fixtures throughout our home.
Now the stair landing feels like a designed moment rather than just a pass through space.
Why Small Spaces Deserve Attention
One thing I have learned while decorating our home is that the in between spaces matter just as much as the main rooms.
Hallways, stair landings, and entryways help create the overall flow of a home. When these spaces are styled intentionally, the entire house feels more cohesive.
This refresh was simple but impactful.
It was really about:
- Choosing a bench with the right scale
- Refreshing the gallery wall photos
- Using a trick to keep frames straight
- Updating the light fixture
Adding greenery for warmth
Together these small changes turned the stair landing into a space that feels intentional, warm, and complete.
A Simple Reminder When Decorating Your Home
If there is one takeaway from this project, it is this.
Even the spaces you walk past every day deserve a little attention.
Sometimes the smallest updates like better lighting, refreshed photos, or a bench that fits the wall properly can make the biggest difference in how your home feels.
Now when we walk upstairs, the stair landing feels styled, welcoming, and connected to the rest of the house.
And that is exactly the feeling I wanted to create.
